A plain-English summary of major scandals, backed by official court documents and news investigations.
What Happened: In 2024, the Supreme Court banned a secret donation system because it hid where politicians got their money Verify Source. Bank data showed the BJP received ₹6,060 Crore (about half of all donations). Reporters found a highly suspicious pattern: 30 companies donated ₹335 Crore to the BJP right around the time they were being raided by government tax and crime agencies, making it look like they were paying for protection.
What Happened: A major news investigation found that politicians accused of corruption can often make their legal troubles disappear by joining the BJP Verify Source. Since 2014, 25 leaders from other parties who were being investigated for crimes switched to the BJP. After switching sides, 23 of them (a massive 92%) saw their criminal cases suddenly paused, closed, or forgotten.
What Happened: In November 2024, the United States government charged Indian billionaire Gautam Adani with running a massive bribery scheme Verify Source. The US claims Adani paid $250 million (over ₹2,000 Crore) in secret bribes to Indian government officials to win profitable solar power contracts. Because Adani is known to be very close to the current government, this has raised huge red flags about unfair favors.
What Happened: Back in the day, the government auditor claimed India lost a massive ₹1.76 Lakh Crore because 2G mobile network licenses were sold too cheaply to favored companies. However, after years of trials, a special court in 2017 found all 18 accused people not guilty Verify Source. The judge said the police completely failed to prove any crime actually happened, though the Supreme Court did cancel the licenses earlier to clean up the system.
What Happened: The government auditor accused the Congress-led government of giving away 194 valuable coal mining areas to private companies for free, instead of auctioning them to the highest bidder Verify Source. They estimated this cost the country ₹1.86 Lakh Crore. In 2014, the Supreme Court agreed this was illegal and unfair, and cancelled the mining rights for 214 coal blocks.
What Happened: Government crime agencies claim the AAP changed Delhi's alcohol selling rules to help specific liquor businessmen make extra profit Verify Source. In return, the AAP allegedly took ₹100 Crore in secret bribes. Because of this, several top leaders, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, were arrested and sent to jail. The controversial alcohol rules were quickly cancelled.
What Happened: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal built his political image on being a "common man" who hated VIP culture. However, a major scandal broke out when it was discovered he spent roughly ₹45 Crore of taxpayer money to renovate his official government house Verify Source. This included luxury items like imported marble, and it happened right during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The AAP later admitted to spending ₹33 Crore.
